Structures in Wood – Awareness of Wood” is the new collective exhibition by the Austrian Xylon Österreich and Friends Association that, in collaboration with CEA – Concilio Europeo dell’Arte, aims to show in Venice, anticipating the 16th Biennale Architettura, how to create contemporary art pieces responding to relevant questions of the present age, but using an old tecnique as xylography.

The fifty-eight artists from all over the world, selected on the base of an interstate call for proposals, show two prints for each: the exposition focuses on wood, because of the sustainability of this vegetable resource and because of its importance through the centuries, following human civilization and culture. The artworks, specifically designed for this exhibition, should mirror the awareness of the material wood, its figure and its structure and they should coincidentally disclose the technical potential of woodcarving in all variations.

Through the use of this tecnique, the artists recall the motto of the Venice Architecture Biennale 2018 “Freespace“: they carve into wood their subjective desires for and prospect of free spaces, in their own living environment and especially in their imagination and express their personal artistic vision, with a result that is as various as homogeneous in the overall view.

Xylon, the international artistic engraving association was founded in Zurich in 1953 and its purpose is to reunite and ease the exchange of all the artists who practice the art of engraving. It promotes this technique all over the world, respecting every art tendencies.
